My tribute to Mom in "Celebrate Life" magazine is out

I wrote "Three Generations for Life" a tribute to how my mother's example as a woman of prayer and pro-life action led to my activism and prayer, and that of her grandaughters. I share how, amidst her cheerful energy at  her final March for Life, in 2009, she was suffering from undected cancer which sent her home to Our Lord within 9 months.
Now she is reaping the rewards of a life well lived for the cause of the Gospel of Life.

You can see Celebrate Life magazine here, but you can only view my piece in the print edition. On the cover is a lovely photo of another pro-life activist who went home this year, Dr Mildred Jefferson.

I'm giving a talk on reaching the hearts and minds of youth for pro-life

Each year, at the March for Life, there are hundreds of thousands of youthful marchers, yet few of them are from the Northeast. Why is that?
On Saturday, October 30, at the Holy Angels Pro-life Outreach Conference in South Meriden, CT,  I will be speaking on how to reach the youth of Connecticut with the pro-life message.
In preparation for this talk, I am looking up youth groups in CT to recommend.
My research on pro-life youth groups in CT has led me to YLife who are sponsoring a pro-life youth conference at Holy Apostles Seminary this Saturday from 9 to 5. The cost is only $15 including lunch, and the speaker, Fr Tad Pacholczyk of the National Catholic Bioethics Center is top notch. See their blog for registration information, but rest assured you can register at the door for the same low price.

Learn why the Church has always opposed IVF, and meet some pro-life youth.
Be inspired by the Culture of Life among youth.

Maddie Curtis is on American Idol!

Last year I met Barbara Curtis author and mom of 12 who blogs at Mommy Life as we were awarded the American Life League Pro-life Blog awards. She was so warm and real, and we held hands excitedly as we awaited our trophies. It was an honor for me to be considered on the same level as this accomplished lady who has just reverted to the Catholic faith. She is often in the media as a outstanding pro-life witness, but the other day, I was thrilled when. .
Isabella burst into the room to tell me about an American Idol acceptee named Maddie who has 4 brothers with Down syndrome, I KNEW it was Barb's daughter. What a gorgeous voice, on a lovely young lady who simply radiates love in the home scenes shot with her brothers. And she auditioned with the song "Hallelujah".
Her faith simply radiated through her powerful performance. I just loved the reunion she had with two of her brothers and mom outside the audition. Her description of her brothers with Down syndrome says it all, "they see the world in color; we need more to see the world that way."

I wish Maddie Godspeed, I'll be watching, and voting!
Thank you for raising the profile of famlies who love their children with Down syndrome, sweetheart! You are a winner just as you are.,
Watch her story and inspiring audition here.

2010 ALL Pro-life blog awards

Thank you to whoever nominated Causa Nostrae Laetitiae for American Life League's 2010 Pro-life Blog Awards. I am honored to be among some of the best blogs out there, and to be nominated after winning the Pro-life Unity Award in 2009. It would be an honor to win again, though part of me wants someone else to have a turn, but I had a wonderful time at the ALL Conference last year and would welcome a return visit.

I will defer to vox populi since this year the awards are won by a popular vote, rather than a panel.

You can vote for Causa Nostrae Laetitiae here.

Putting your money where your mouth is

This morning I had four young women in the car and two dogs. We were heading to Long Island from Eastern CT in the rain. We passed by the abortion clinic where our diocese is holding 40 Days for Life and saw three young clinic escorts idly drinking coffee. Then a noticed a lone older man praying his rosary on the sidewalk. My heart broke, as I also saw the tell tale sign of a man waiting in his car while his girlfriend had an abortion; with their preschool son.
I asked the praying man, "are you alone?" "yes" he replied bravely. "Now, you're not," I answered firmly, heading off to park where abortion protesters are allowed.
Soon, the man was joined by five of us, three teenage girls, and my precious seven year old with Down syndrome. We prayed two rosaries for the escorts, the abortionist, and the nurses. but most especially the man, his girlfriend and their children; BOTH of them.
Sometimes saying you are pro-life means putting your money where your mouth is. Getting drenched in the rain when you had other plans. Risking ridicule from your peers, like my daughters did. Arriving late to your destination.
After forty minutes outside the clinic I spied a happy young couple approaching us, arm in arm under an umbrella, they eyes told us they were deeply in love.
They were the 11AM prayer warriors, and my new friend, John, a pro-lifer for three decades, would no longer be outnumbered by the pro-aborts outside.
There's a lesson to be learned by those of us who are old enough to remember when abortion was illegal. It's a happy one; the younger generation, the survivors of Roe v Wade are coming to take the torch of the pro-life movement from our tired grasp.
They are like this young woman who didn't let her studies at Notre Dame make her abort her daughter. She finished both her education and a tour in the Army.
Now she carries her good example to women at a Crisis Pregnancy Center in Charlotte, NC. This good work is supported by Belmont Abbey College.

How the International Down Syndrome Coalition is changing hearts

My friend Diane from IDSC has given me permission to share from her email today. I have been blogging to save lives of babies in danger of abortion because they have Down syndrome for three years. I think I have a handle on how horrible the thinking is about our beloved children, yet Diane's email today left me breathless, and reminded me just how important our internet presence is. We willnever know how many lives we have saved until we meet in heaven. But keep up the good work, Diane, you can see that God has a lot more work for you out there.

Finally, we wanted to share a little information with you. We like to check to see what people will type in their google search engine to find us. We have been surprised to find out that many who are considering abortion are finding us. They are also exiting out of the site on the great pro life resources that we have available for them. We thought you may want to see what some of the words they type into the search engine are. I have copied these exactly as they are, and they are a small sample:

choosing to terminate a downs baby

is down syndrome incompatible with life
do children suffer from Down syndrome
parents starving baby down syndrome
ending pregnancy for down syndrome
choosing to terminate a pregnancy for down syndrome
option to terminate the life of a baby with down syndrome
life for the suffer of down syndrome
our baby has down syndrome
federal law concerning "down syndrome" (I have no clue what this would mean.)

Please continue to keep these families in your thoughts and prayers. We hope that any information we have to offere will help them as they make their decision for their child. We are so glad that the IDSC is coming up so often in search engines when they are looking for information concerning abortion of their child who happens to have Down syndrome. These words can take your breath away. Real people, needing real solutions are finding us!

Thanks to all of you helping to get the word out there, people are finding us!

The courage of some mothers really inspire me

I am gaining new followers on Twitter every day, and it fascinates me to learn about each one. One pro-life mom of 5, Elizabeth Esther is a great blogger, and posted this wonderful story about a mom who just wouln't give up on Emmanuelle. These difficult times call for true pro-life heroism. She wrote, "We were adamant that God’s will be done and we knew ending our baby’s life was not our decision. We were told we were naïve, foolish, selfish, thoughtless-“do you think this baby wants to live, you have no idea what this will do to your family.”
Yet she carried her baby to term, and two years later she is surpassing all expectations.
Happy Mother's Day to all you brave women out there who don't listen to doomsday doctors, who put your own life on the line to save your baby.
There is a special reward awaiting you in heaven.

Kurt Kondrich: Chloe's Dad

Tonight, in an attempt to get in touch with my natural habitat, I attended a nature workshop at my local library on vernal pools. Those are temporary bodies of water which appear in spring giving frogs and salamanders a place to lay eggs and the tadpoles a place to grow legs before they take up lives as forest creatures. I think that God's wonderful plan for nature is awesome, however the evening soured for me as the presenters described new federal grant monies to study rare salamanders and toads.
In this time of recession, we have millions to study humble amphibians, yet when Dr Mobley discussed his promising research to provide a medication to normalize the cognition of people with Down syndrome, he couldn't raise the $5 million dollars to develop the drugs from the government. Nearly half a million people with Down syndrome are in the USA (should be 5 million if they weren't aborted at a rate of 90%). These people can't get funding for drugs which would make them able to live independent lives, go to college, have fulfilling jobs, marry and live just like we do.
Salamanders. Phooey!
Kurt Kondrich(creator of the lovely video posted below) had the same reaction I did when he learned about the millions used to study the Kangaroo Rat from satellites. This shows a sad sense of priorities in this nation. Why don't people come before toads and rats?!

Good Counsel Homes to open affiliate in Norwich CT

I have had the pleasure of meeting Joan and Chris Bell and their beautiful children twice. The latest was walking downtown Yonkers, NY from the Papal Youth Rally where I first recognized his son Emilio. Chris and Joan have lived exemplary Catholic lives fully devoted to the prolife cause in precisely the ways the Vortex video below challenges us. Please help him with his work at Good Counsel Homes. The Right to Life group I belong to here in Norwich voted to join his network, trusting that his experience and reputation will guide our work.
Read the article in Catholic New York which describes his work.
Here's a personal note from Chris Bell,

Would you kindly consider passing this article around to all your friends, family, anyone and ask if any can send any support our way now -- no gift is too large or too small -- it will help the dozens of moms and babies with us today, and those calling tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. We really need help now.

Thanks. God bless you greatly. Hope to see you soon.

Peace,
Christopher Bell +
